Oriental Rugs & A Great Persian Hand Knotted Rug
April 7, 2010
Oriental rugs were introduced to America during the Centennial Exhibition in Philadelphia. This was in 1876. This rug exhibit was seen by William Sloan founder of W.J. Sloan. He was so impressed by the rugs that he bought them all and took them back to America where he opened the first major retail store for Oriental rugs. In Europe in the 19th century the Oriental rugs were being studied by scholars. Now the biggest collection of Oriental rugs is on display at the Metropolitan Museum of Art which is located in New York City. Other displays are at the Boston Museum of Fine Arts and The National Museum in Teheran.
