Color to Influence Home Decor

May 24, 2010

All the way back to historical Chinese rug making comes the creation and addition of beautiful designs and color to the home decoration in rugs. The pieces that are hand woven also have a worded brown border and are dated back as late as the 19th century.  The rug industry in the late 19th century took a huge turn for the best in China.  Hundreds of hand knotting factories was producing thousands of rugs to be exported all over the country. The production was very high and labor was cheap.  The designs were fabulous but creative with many colors.

Color was added in the early 19th century and by the 1920’s manufacturers were combining Chinese motifs with new designs and colors. A modern rug in the Chinese influence can be found in this hand tufted sage green with cherries rug. Traditionally the Chinese used blues, yellows, reds and ivory but then they added wild colors such as green, fuchsia and brilliant gold.  The Chinese kept their traditional figures such as hanging lanterns, curved bridges and exquisite vases. At this time bamboo, lotus flowers and splashes of color were added across the field of the rug.  Dragons, phoenix birds and butterflies were starting to be added in an Egyptian style. Designer rugs moved this creation forward and now we have a huge assortment of designer rugs and area rugs to choose from.
