Kids Rugs
February 11, 2008
Do you know how excited we get when it comes to giving a little something special to the homeless to keep as their own? Of course, you do. How about kids area rugs for a child? You probably would not think so, but think again, after you hear our little story…
We were working our way through our donations that were dropped off over the last couple weeks, while it seemed like more than a few of our homeless people came by to see what all the fuss was about. Noticing that we had brought out all these new items, it was fun to watch them watch us and the little treasures we were finding in the big bin of treats.
Hours went by as the people came and went as we were readying our choice items to be given out towards the end of the day. The people know to come back around 4pm to see what they might get to take “home” to their habitat for the evening. A cardboard box, a shelter… we never actually know where many of them go, when they leave and head out into the night.
It was around 5:30 when we were closing up we discovered a little boy wrapped up in our area rugs we keep just inside the back door. He was fast asleep and all rolled up in the fun little rug. Cute as a bug in a rug… as they say.
We did not know who he belonged to, so we let him sleep and one of the volunteers offered to stay with him till he woke or his mom or dad would stop back looking for him. Hours later an old man came by looking for the boy… a friend, who our volunteer knew and was pleased he was looking out for the boy.
Our volunteer, Rex decided it was best to let the old man take the rug and child, all wrapped up as one… after all it was beginning to get cooler outside and there was a chill in the air. The area rug would be a sort-of present to the man for the boy, since he was looking out for the child.
The old man picked up the boy, rug and all and carried him out into the night… the child barely stirred… another great day and evening to share a small story… from time to time, the old man stops by looking for lute and on occasion makes mention how glad he is that the boy stays warm in the kids rugs.
